Welcome to the unofficial web site of the
3973rd Combat Defense Squadron (CDS) Moron Air Base, Spain -

Moron AB
was assigned to 16th AF and 16th AF was made up of 6 SAC Reflex bases during the time period of 1951 thru April 15, 1966 at which time all of the 16th AF bases were turned over to USAFE . Three bases in Spain: Moron , Zaragoza and Torrejon . Three bases in Morocco: Ben_Guerir , Nouasseur and Sidi Slimane . In addition to the main Air Bases, numerous AC & W sites, communication sites, POL pipeline and Alert Fighter cover were also maintained as part of the 16th AF. SAC was the hosting command and 16th AF was unusual in its make up because it never owned its own bomber and fighter aircraft. The aircraft assigned were always from another ZI or Europe base and other numbered AF. Every 90 days new bombers, crews and support personnel arrived at the Reflex base. This site is dedicated to all the Officers, NCOs and Airman assigned as Air Policeman/Combat Defense stationed at any of the 16th AF bases from 1951 thru April 15, 1966. All SAC Air Policeman from 1958 thru the fall of 1966 were designated as Combat Defense Force personnel. This web site documents the history and contributions during the Cold War by the Strategic Air Command, 16th AF and its bases. Historical landmarks include: the Berlin Crisis , Cuban Crisis , Vietnam War , JFK Assassination and a B-52 KC-135 accident occurring over Spain. We make no claims on the completeness of the site. We welcome any contributions to any base, bio or accuracy of information on the site. Please contact the web master and we will try to make it part of the site. Morons most famous assigned Officer was LTC Chuck Yeager then commander of Morons first rotating Fighter Sq in 1958, the 1st Fighter Day Sq, Flying F-100's Super Sabers from George AFB, CA. LTC Yeager is now BG YEAGER (Ret.)

My name is Wayne Corbett and I served in the Strategic Air Command for 14 of the 24 years between 1964 and 1988. My last assignment in SAC was as Director of Public Affairs at SAC HQs. I retired in 1993 after 30 years active duty.

I have recently discovered the web page of the 3973CDS and just had a chance to look through almost all of the information there. WOW!!! That is a great collection of photos, stories, etc. I am greatly impressed. Super job. Congratulations to all who had a hand in putting that collection together and onto the internet for all to see.

Is all that information published in hard copy in a book or loose leaf binder or on CD or in any form????? I am very interested because I want to get a copy if it is available. I have a large collection of books, videos, periodicals, personal memoirs, etc. about the Strategic Air Command. The collection has more than 300 books about SAC and the collection includes probably 2,000 to 3,000 items. I am told it is one of the largest about SAC in private hands. I am still actively trying to grow the collection and thus would like to get a copy of the material on the 3973CDS site if it is available. I have committed to donate my entire collection to my undergraduate alma mater, University of South Carolina, and specifically to the Rare Books and Special Collections Division of USC’s Thomas Cooper Library. The Cooper Library will maintain the collection in tact, grow it, and make it available to veterans, historians, and anybody with a real interest in SAC. The Cooper Library is building a new $20 million addition to house its Rare Books and Special Collections and the new facility will probably open in spring of 2010. At about that time I will deliver my collection to the Cooper Library.

Again, my congratulations on the great work in putting together your web page.
Please let me know if there is any way I can get a copy of the info on the page.

Thanks much.
Wayne Corbett

This is a great site, really a lot of memories in those pics. Those who built the site deserve a lot of credit. One of the days I'll remember the most was the day the Cuban Missle crisis started, I had the flu and was walking a perimeter post on the day shift. Made it back to the barracks and flopped in the rack, the next thing I know someone is running thru the building getting everybody up to go back to work.......groan!!! I've tried to keep in touch with a couple of my buds from back in the day, Varni. Matlock and Silva. We spent some good times together. Gotta go and get ready for guard mount.
